Do you “JUICEY” take Responsibility, TODAY!

What?  Take responsibility!  What does that mean to you in your current day to day life ?  In DrBev’s World, Gestalt Principle, number four (GP4) the definition is “Take your ability to respond by word, thoughts, and or action.”  In other words taking the opportunity or ability to act independently and make decisions without authorization of another.  “If you own your story you get to write the ending” (Brene Brown).

Living with integrity and taking responsibility is define as not settling for less than what you know you deserve in your relationships with others. Do you “Juicey” Ask for what you want and need from others, speak your truth, even though it might create conflict or tension.  More importantly, behaving in ways that are in harmony with your personal values  making choices based on what you believe, and not what others believe.

Eleanor Roosevelt stated, “In the long run, we shape our lives, and we shape ourselves. The process never ends until we die. And the choices we make are ultimately our own responsibility.”

Do you, do you, Juicey, “What you call your destiny is truly your character and that character can be altered. The knowledge that you are responsible for your actions and attitudes does not need to be discouraging, because it also means that you are free to change your destiny.  You are not in bondage to your past, which has shaped your feelings, to race, inheritance, and background. All this can be altered if you have the courage to examine how it formed you. You can alter your chemistry provided you have the courage to dissect your elements (Anaïs Nin, The Diary of Anaïs Nin, Vol. 1: 1931-1934).

Never forget, the victim mindset dilutes the human potential. By not accepting personal responsibility for your circumstances, you greatly reduce your power to change your circumstance (Steve Maraboli, Unapologetically You: Reflections on Life and the Human Experience).

It seems that the value set changes with each individual (Hall, Lindholm, pg. 91) Basically, an individual’s values are what that individual decides they are.  Unfortunately understanding that I am an individual and am responsible for creating the list of what values I will abide by does not make living by my values and taking responsibility any easier. Personal responsibility is being in control of your life. Developing personal responsibility can be beneficial. By developing personal responsibility you will evolve emotionally.

  1. Dr. Bev,

Great article…especially “If you own your story, you get to write the ending.” Even after a tough session, I know what you say is ultimately going to lead to my happiness even though it’s difficult to hear. Thank you for everything you do…you are more amazing than you will ever know! I’ve had a few angles in my life, and you are one of them.
